Tom Sawyer Abroad
Tom Sawyer Abroad, published in 1894, sends Tom, Huckleberry Finn and Jim on a new adventure, narrated as before by Huck. Restless after his earlier exploits, Tom goes with his friends to see a balloon in St. Louis, and the three are carried off when its mad inventor casts loose. The balloon crosses the Atlantic to the Sahara, where they watch a caravan, are fooled by a mirage, meet lions and a sandstorm, and visit the Sphinx and the pyramids. Much of the humor lies in the arguments among the three travelers, with Tom showing off his learning, Huck puzzling over geography and Jim sticking to common sense. It is a light comic extension of the earlier books. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
