Through Finland in Carts

by Mrs. Alec-Tweedie

About 8 h 02 min of reading29 chapters

Mrs. Alec Tweedie, an English travel writer, visited Finland in the summer of 1896, when it was a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire, and published Through Finland in Carts the following year. She describes a Finnish country house, the baths, a night at the monastery of Valamo, a music festival at Sordavala, the Kalevala, the rapids at Imatra, the midsummer fires, the position of women and their education, and long days jolting through Savolax in the two-wheeled carts of the title. The book was reissued in a cheap edition with an appendix, included here, on Finnish nationality and politics written in 1912. She writes with curiosity, humor and strong opinions. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
