The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors, first published in 1875, is a polemic by Kersey Graves, an American freethinker and former Quaker. Graves argues that the story of Christ was assembled from the myths of earlier savior gods, and he lists parallels he claims to find: virgin births, guiding stars, birthdays on the twenty-fifth of December, miracles, crucifixions, descents into hell and resurrections, attributed to Krishna, Mithra, Prometheus and many others. The book was popular among skeptics, but historians and scholars of religion have long rejected most of its claims and its unsourced evidence. It is chiefly of interest today as a document of nineteenth-century freethought and religious controversy.
