The Works of Lord Byron. Vol. 6
This sixth volume of the poetry in Ernest Hartley Coleridge's edition of Byron, published by John Murray in 1903, is devoted to Don Juan. It contains all sixteen completed cantos and the fragment of a seventeenth, together with the dedication and an introduction describing the poem's composition and reception. Byron's hero is a handsome young Spaniard whose love affairs, shipwreck, slavery in Constantinople, service in the Russian army and adventures in English country houses give the poet endless occasions for digression and satire. Witty, irreverent and conversational in its ottava rima, the poem was left unfinished at Byron's death. Coleridge's notes explain its many allusions. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
