The Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 1. Poetry
This is the first volume of the poetry in the edition of Lord Byron's works edited by Ernest Hartley Coleridge, which became the standard text, with bibliographical notes and annotations. It contains Byron's early verse, from the privately printed Fugitive Pieces and Poems on Various Occasions to Hours of Idleness, with its poems on Newstead Abbey, Harrow and the loves and friendships of his youth, followed by the satire English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, his furious reply to the critics who had mocked that first book, and the later satires Hints from Horace and The Curse of Minerva. Here the reader sees Byron becoming Byron, from sentimental schoolboy to sharp-tongued wit. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first poems are free.
