The second volume of the Works of Lord Byron edited by Ernest Hartley Coleridge, published in 1899, is given wholly to Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. The poem that made Byron famous in 1812 follows a jaded young nobleman through Portugal and Spain, Albania and Greece in its first two cantos, and in the third and fourth, written after his exile in 1816 and 1818, through the field of Waterloo, the Rhine, the Alps and Italy to Venice and Rome, where the fiction of Harold falls away and the poet speaks in his own voice. Coleridge supplies introductions, Byron's own prose notes, the readings of the manuscripts, and an itinerary of the travels on which the poem is based. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening pages are free.
