Childe Harold's Pilgrimage
Childe Harold's Pilgrimage made Byron famous overnight when its first two cantos appeared in 1812; the third followed in 1816 and the fourth in 1818. A disillusioned young nobleman travels through Portugal and Spain during the Peninsular War, then to Albania and Greece, and in the later cantos to the field of Waterloo, the Rhine, the Alps and Italy, from Venice to Rome. The poem is only loosely a narrative: it is a sequence of landscapes, historical meditations and outbursts of personal feeling in Spenserian stanzas, and Byron soon dropped the pretense that Harold was anyone but himself. The passages on the Battle of Waterloo, the ocean and the ruins of Rome became some of the most quoted lines in English. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening canto free.
