This is the first volume of Rowland E. Prothero's edition of Byron's Letters and Journals, published in 1898 as part of John Murray's revised edition of the Works. It covers the years from 1798 to August 1811, from Byron's boyhood letters to his mother, his half-sister Augusta and the family lawyer John Hanson, through Harrow and Cambridge, the publication of his juvenile poems and English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, to his travels in Albania and Greece and the death of his mother. Prothero added many letters unknown to earlier editors and annotated them in detail. Already the voice is unmistakable: quick, mocking, affectionate and self-dramatizing by turns. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
