The Use and Need of the Life of Carry A. Nation
The Use and Need of the Life of Carry A. Nation is the autobiography of the Kansas temperance crusader who became famous in 1900 and 1901 for walking into saloons with a hatchet. In this revised edition of 1905 she tells of her Kentucky childhood, her first marriage to a physician destroyed by drink, her years in Texas and at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, where she began her raids, and the many arrests and jail terms that followed in Wichita and Topeka. Sermons, letters from supporters, songs, newspaper verse, an attack on spiritualism, a visit to Yale and the constitution of her Prohibition Federation are interleaved with the narrative. The result is less a memoir than a campaign document. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
