Carry A. Nation (1846–1911) was an American temperance campaigner. Born in Kentucky, she married a physician whose drinking destroyed the marriage and later a minister, David Nation, and settled in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, where she organized a chapter of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. In 1900 she began attacking saloons with rocks and then with a hatchet, was arrested some thirty times, and paid her fines by lecturing and selling souvenir hatchets. Her autobiography, The Use and Need of the Life of Carry A. Nation, appeared in 1904. She died in Leavenworth after collapsing on a platform.
