Jahangir, son of Akbar, ruled the Mughal empire from 1605 to 1627 and, like his ancestor Babur, kept a record of his reign. This first volume of the memoirs, translated by Alexander Rogers and edited by Henry Beveridge for the Royal Asiatic Society, covers the first twelve years, arranged by the New Year feasts of the Persian calendar. The emperor describes his accession and the rebellion of his son Khusrau, his court, hunts, elephants and gifts, his justice and his failings, and records with curiosity the animals, birds and flowers brought to him and the paintings he commissioned. Beveridge's preface explains the state of the Persian text and the corrections made to Rogers's draft. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
