Jahangir (1569–1627) was the fourth Mughal emperor of India, reigning from 1605 until his death. Born Salim, the son of Akbar the Great, he rebelled against his father before succeeding him, put down the revolt of his own son Khusrau and extended the empire's control in Bengal and the Deccan while leaving much of the government to his wife Nur Jahan and her family. He was a connoisseur of painting, under whom the Mughal studio reached its height, and a keen naturalist who had rare animals and birds recorded. His memoirs, the Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri, continue the tradition begun by his ancestor Babur.
