The String of Pearls; Or, The Barber of Fleet Street. A Domestic Romance.
The String of Pearls is the penny serial in which Sweeney Todd, the barber of Fleet Street, first appeared, published in weekly parts in the 1840s and later expanded to this long version. Todd's customers sit down for a shave and are never seen again, while next door Mrs. Lovett's pie shop does a roaring trade. The plot follows Johanna Oakley's search for her missing sailor sweetheart, Mark Ingestrie, who went into the barber's shop carrying a string of pearls, and the uncovering of what lies in the vaults beneath St. Dunstan's church. The authorship is debated, but the book is usually credited to James Malcolm Rymer. It is lurid, digressive and often grimly funny, and its barber is still alive in popular culture. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
