The Story of the Mormons, published in 1902, is a critical history of the Latter-day Saints from their origins to 1901 by the journalist William Alexander Linn. He begins with Joseph Smith's family and youth as a money-digger, the announcement of the golden plates and the Book of Mormon, and the theory that it was based on a manuscript by Solomon Spaulding, then follows the church through Ohio, Missouri and Illinois, the founding of Nauvoo and Smith's death, the migration to Utah under Brigham Young, plural marriage, conflicts with the federal government and the road to statehood. Linn writes as a skeptical outsider, and the book was controversial among church members. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
