The Sins of the Cities of the Plain; or, The Recollections of a Mary-Ann
with Short Essays on Sodomy and Tribadism
The Sins of the Cities of the Plain, privately printed in London in 1881 in an edition of 250 copies, is a work of Victorian pornography presented as the recollections of Jack Saul, a young male prostitute, related to a gentleman who meets him in Leicester Square. Saul was a real figure who later gave evidence in the libel case that followed the Cleveland Street scandal of 1889, but the authorship of the book is uncertain. Its frank and explicit episodes, followed by short essays on sodomy and tribadism, are intended for adult readers only. Historians of sexuality value it as one of the few surviving texts that describe the hidden homosexual subculture of nineteenth-century London. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
