The Scourge of God: A Romance of Religious Persecution
The Scourge of God, published in 1898, is a historical romance of the Camisard rising, the revolt of the Protestant peasants of the Cévennes against Louis XIV after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. John Bloundelle-Burton, who specialized in adventure stories of the seventeenth century, sends an English officer into the mountains of Languedoc in 1702 on a private errand concerning an inheritance and involves him in the war of dragonnades, burned villages and prophesying shepherds that followed the murder of the Abbé du Chayla. The title is the name the persecuted gave to the king, in the words of the epigraph. The book has the pace and clear moral lines of its genre and a real feeling for the country. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
