The religions of ancient Egypt and Babylonia

by A. H. Sayce

About 11 h 13 min of reading23 chapters

A. H. Sayce, professor of Assyriology at Oxford and one of the pioneers of the field, delivered these Gifford Lectures on the conception of the divine among the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians. The first part treats Egyptian religion: the soul and the other world, the sun-god and the Ennead, animal worship, the gods of Egypt, Osiris and the sacred books. The second part turns to Babylonia: primitive animism, the gods, the sun-god and Istar, Assur and monotheism, cosmologies, sacred books, myths and epics, temple ritual and astro-theology. Sayce draws on the inscriptions and texts then being deciphered, and while scholarship has moved on, the lectures remain a lucid introduction to these ancient faiths. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
