About 8 h 59 min of reading47 chapters

J. A. MacCulloch's The Religion of the Ancient Celts, published in 1911 and dedicated to Andrew Lang, was the first full attempt in English to describe Celtic religion from the evidence of classical writers, inscriptions, Irish and Welsh literature and surviving folk custom. After chapters on the Celtic peoples and the gods of Gaul, it treats the Irish mythological cycle and the Tuatha Dé Danann, the gods of the Britons, the Cúchulainn and Fionn sagas, the cult of the dead, the worship of nature, rivers, wells, trees and animals, sacrifice, the Druids, the festivals, magic and the Celtic ideas of the afterlife, rebirth and Elysium. MacCulloch is cautious about the speculative theories of earlier writers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
