The reign of Mary Tudor

by James Anthony Froude

About 10 h 30 min of reading10 chapters

The Reign of Mary Tudor is drawn from James Anthony Froude's History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada and was issued on its own in Everyman's Library with an introduction by W. Llewelyn Williams. In six chapters Froude follows Mary from the brief reign of Lady Jane Grey and her own accession through her marriage to Philip of Spain, the reconciliation of England with Rome, the burning of Protestant martyrs, the loss of Calais and her death in 1558. Froude wrote as a committed Protestant and a vivid narrator, drawing on state papers and ambassadors' dispatches, and his portrait of a sincere, unhappy and unyielding queen remains forceful even where later historians disagree. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
