James Anthony Froude (1818–1894) was an English historian, biographer and novelist. Brother of the Tractarian Hurrell Froude, he lost his faith at Oxford, and his novel The Nemesis of Faith was publicly burned at Exeter College in 1849. His twelve-volume History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada, from which The Reign of Mary Tudor is drawn, made his reputation as a vivid, strongly Protestant narrator. A disciple of Thomas Carlyle, he became his literary executor and biographer, provoking controversy with his frank account of Carlyle's marriage. He was named Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in 1892.
