The problem of Cell 13

by Jacques Futrelle

About 5 h 11 min of reading7 chapters

Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, known as The Thinking Machine, holds that logic can solve anything, and in the title story he bets that he can escape from a death-row cell in a week using only his wits. The six further stories collected here, among them The Scarlet Thread, The Great Auto Mystery and The Ralston Bank Burglary, pair him with the reporter Hutchinson Hatch, who does the legwork while the professor squints and deduces. Jacques Futrelle wrote them for Boston newspapers in 1905 and 1906; he died on the Titanic in 1912. The Problem of Cell 13 itself is regularly counted among the best detective short stories ever written. The stories are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first one is free.
