The Preaching of Islam: A History of the Propagation of the Muslim Faith

by Sir Thomas Walker Arnold

About 12 h 29 min of reading43 chapters

The Preaching of Islam, first published in 1896 and revised in 1913, is T. W. Arnold's history of how Islam spread, written to correct the common European assumption that it spread by the sword. Arnold, who taught for a decade at the Muslim college at Aligarh, follows the faith from the Prophet's own preaching through the conversion of the Arabs, the Christians of western Asia, Africa and Spain, the Persians, the Turks and Mongols, India, China, the Malay Archipelago and Africa south of the Sahara, giving at each stage the evidence for peaceful missionary effort and the conditions that favored it. He documents forced conversions where he finds them. The book remains a standard reference. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
