The passing of the great race; or, The racial basis of European history
The Passing of the Great Race, published in 1916 by Madison Grant, a New York lawyer and conservationist, is a work of racial theory that has long been discredited. Grant divided Europeans into Nordic, Alpine and Mediterranean races, claimed that the Nordics were superior, and warned that immigration and intermarriage would destroy them. The book was influential in its day: it helped shape American immigration restrictions in the 1920s and was admired by Nazi ideologues. Modern genetics and anthropology have rejected its premises. It is read today as a historical document of scientific racism and of the ideas that fed the eugenics movement.
