Madison Grant (1865–1937) was an American lawyer, conservationist and advocate of scientific racism. A wealthy New Yorker, he helped found the New York Zoological Society, which created the Bronx Zoo, as well as the Save the Redwoods League and the American Bison Society, and he worked to protect wildlife and national parks. He was also a leading eugenicist, and his book The Passing of the Great Race (1916), which ranked European peoples by race and warned against immigration, helped shape the restrictive American immigration laws of the 1920s and was admired by Nazi ideologues. His racial theories have long been discredited.
