The Part Borne by the Dutch in the Discovery of Australia 1606-1765
J. E. Heeres, a professor at the Dutch Colonial Institute in Delft, prepared this work for the Royal Dutch Geographical Society in 1899. It documents how Dutch East India Company ships, mostly by accident while bound for Java, charted the Australian coast long before Cook: the Duyfken in the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1606, Dirk Hartog on the west coast in 1616, the wreck of the Batavia in 1629, Abel Tasman's discovery of Tasmania and New Zealand in 1642, and later surveys. A chronological introduction is followed by the documents themselves, translated from the Company's archives: instructions, journals, and reports, many printed here for the first time. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
