Jan Ernst Heeres (1858–1932) was a Dutch historian and archivist, a specialist in the records of the Dutch East India Company. He worked for many years in the national archives at The Hague, taught at the Dutch Colonial Institute in Delft, and later held the chair of colonial history at Leiden. His edition of the Company's treaties, the Corpus Diplomaticum Neerlando-Indicum, was a work of decades. The Part Borne by the Dutch in the Discovery of Australia, 1606–1765, published in English in 1899 for the Royal Dutch Geographical Society, gathered and translated the documents of the Dutch voyages that charted much of the Australian coast before Cook.
