The Pagan Tribes of Borneo
A Description of Their Physical Moral and Intellectual Condition, with Some Discussion of Their Ethnic Relations
The Pagan Tribes of Borneo, published in 1912, is an ethnographic portrait of the peoples of the interior of Borneo by Charles Hose, a colonial administrator who spent many years in Sarawak, and the psychologist William McDougall. Drawing on their own observation rather than earlier writers, they describe the island's geography and rivers, the Kayans, Kenyahs, Ibans and other groups, the nomadic hunters of the forest, their longhouses, agriculture, warfare, arts and crafts, and their ideas about spirits, omens and the soul. An appendix by A. C. Haddon discusses physical anthropology. The book reflects the assumptions of its time but remains a detailed record of societies at the end of the nineteenth century.
