The New Hudson Shakespeare: Julius Cæsar
Julius Caesar, probably first performed in 1599, is William Shakespeare's tragedy of the conspiracy against Caesar and its consequences. Fearing that Caesar means to make himself king, Cassius draws the honorable Brutus into a plot, and the assassination on the Ides of March is followed by Antony's funeral oration, which turns the Roman crowd against the conspirators and leads to civil war and the battle of Philippi. This New Hudson Shakespeare edition of 1908, prepared by Ebenezer Charlton Black from Henry Norman Hudson's work, includes an introduction on the play's sources in North's Plutarch, its date, construction, verse and characters, together with notes for students. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
