The Myth of Hiawatha, and Other Oral Legends, published in 1856, is Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's selection of the Native American tales he had gathered over decades among the Ojibwe and neighboring peoples of the Great Lakes, much of it with the help of his Ojibwe wife, Jane Johnston Schoolcraft. He dedicated it to Longfellow, whose Song of Hiawatha, published the year before, drew on Schoolcraft's earlier collections. The book includes the cycle of Manabozho, here called Hiawatha, Paup-Puk-Keewiss, Osseo, son of the Evening Star, Kwasind the strong man, Mondamin and the origin of corn, Peboan and Seegwun, the allegory of winter and spring, and many shorter fables.
