The Microscope. Its History, Construction, and Application 15th ed.
Being a familiar introduction to the use of the instrument, and the study of microscopical science
Jabez Hogg, a London eye surgeon and president of a microscopical society, first published The Microscope in 1854 as a familiar introduction to the instrument, and it was revised many times; this is the fifteenth edition of 1898. The first part explains the history and construction of the microscope, its lenses, stands, condensers and accessories, the techniques of preparing objects, micro-photography and the use of polarized light. The larger second part applies the microscope across natural history, from minute plants such as algae and single-celled animals like the radiolaria to sponges, mollusks, insects and the tissues of vertebrates. Colored and plain plates illustrate many of the objects described. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
