The Martian: A Novel
The Martian was George du Maurier's third and last novel, published in 1897, after his death the previous year, with his own illustrations. Narrated by Robert Maurice, it tells the life of his school friend Barty Josselin, a handsome, gifted and wildly charming boy whom he first meets at a boarding school in Paris. Barty grows up to become a soldier, a singer and finally a famous writer, guided by a mysterious presence that speaks to him in his sleep. Like Trilby and Peter Ibbetson, the novel is full of du Maurier's affection for Paris and his own youth, and it blends a warm memoir of friendship with the supernatural. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
