George du Maurier (1834–1896) was a French-born British illustrator and novelist. Born in Paris, he studied art there and in Antwerp, where he lost the sight of one eye, and settled in London, where he became one of the leading cartoonists of Punch, gently satirizing the manners of the upper middle class and the aesthetic movement. He illustrated novels by Thackeray, Gaskell and Hardy. Late in life he turned to fiction himself with Peter Ibbetson (1891), Trilby (1894), whose sinister hypnotist Svengali became a byword, and The Martian, published after his death. He was the grandfather of the novelist Daphne du Maurier.
