The lotus of the wonderful law
The Lotus Sutra, or Saddharma Pundarika Sutra, is among the most influential scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism, revered across China, Korea and Japan. This version, published in 1930 by W. E. Soothill, professor of Chinese at Oxford, is an abridged English rendering of the Chinese translation made by Kumārajīva around AD 406. Soothill explains in his introduction the history, form and doctrine of the sutra, and then, omitting the repetitions and verse restatements, presents its teaching that all beings may attain Buddhahood, together with its famous parables: the burning house, the prodigal son and the seeking father, the magic city and the physician. It is a readable introduction to a central text of East Asian religion. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
