The Life of St. Teresa of Jesus, of the Order of Our Lady of Carmel

Teresa of Ávila, the Spanish Carmelite nun, mystic and reformer of her order, wrote this account of her life at the command of her confessors, completing it in the 1560s. She tells of her childhood and early longing for martyrdom, her entry into the convent, years of illness and lukewarm prayer, and her slow conversion, and devotes long chapters to the stages of prayer, which she compares to ways of watering a garden, and to the visions and raptures that followed. The book ends with the founding of her first reformed convent, Saint Joseph's at Ávila. This is David Lewis's translation in its third edition of 1904, with an introduction by Benedict Zimmerman. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
