The Life of a Regimental Officer During the Great War, 1793-1815 was compiled by Lieutenant-Colonel A. F. Mockler-Ferryman from the letters of Colonel Samuel Rice of the 51st Light Infantry and published in 1913. It follows Rice from his studies for the army and his commission as an ensign through the attack on Corsica, service in the Mediterranean and Ceylon, the Corunna campaign, the battles and sieges of the Peninsular War, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz and Salamanca among them, and on to Waterloo and the occupation of Paris. Rice's letters give a frank view of regimental life during the long wars with France. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
