The Kybalion
A Study of The Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt and Greece
The Kybalion, published in Chicago in 1908 under the name Three Initiates, claims to transmit the teaching of Hermes Trismegistus as preserved in a body of maxims passed from master to pupil. It sets out seven Hermetic principles: mentalism, that all is mind; correspondence, as above so below; vibration; polarity; rhythm; cause and effect; and gender. Each is explained in short chapters that mix occult tradition with the New Thought vocabulary of the day, and the book ends with advice on mental transmutation, the practical use of the principles to change one's own states of mind. The real author is generally thought to be the prolific New Thought writer William Walker Atkinson. It remains widely read in esoteric circles. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
