The Homilies of the Anglo-Saxon Church
Containing the Sermones Catholici, or Homilies of Ælfric, in the Original Anglo-Saxon, with an English Version. Volume I.
The Homilies of the Anglo-Saxon Church presents the first series of Catholic Homilies written around 990 by Ælfric, the monk of Cerne who later became abbot of Eynsham, with the Old English text and Benjamin Thorpe's English translation side by side. Published in 1844 by the Ælfric Society, this first volume follows the church year from Christmas through Lent, Easter, Pentecost and the feasts of the saints to Advent. Ælfric wrote to give ordinary listeners clear teaching in their own language, and his sermons on the Nativity, the Lord's Prayer, the Catholic faith and the apostles are among the finest prose of Anglo-Saxon England. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
