The History of the Popes: From the Foundation of the See of Rome, to the Present Time, 3rd Ed. Vol. 1
Archibald Bower, a Scot who had taught in Italian universities and served the Inquisition before leaving the Catholic Church for England, wrote The History of the Popes as an openly Protestant work. This first volume of the third edition, printed in London in 1750 and dedicated to the king as protector of the Reformed religion, opens with a preface on his aims and then moves pope by pope from Saint Peter and the early bishops of Rome through the age of persecution and the councils of the fourth century, ending with Celestine in the early fifth. Bower's purpose is to show how papal power grew, and his learning is always in the service of that argument.
