The History of the Knights Templars, the Temple Church, and the Temple

by C. G. Addison

About 8 h 42 min of reading73 chapters

Charles G. Addison, a barrister of the Inner Temple, wrote this history in 1842, when the Temple Church in London was being restored. The first and longest part tells the story of the Knights Templars from their foundation during the Crusades to protect pilgrims, through their rise to wealth and military power in the Holy Land and across Europe, to the accusations, trials and burnings that led to the suppression of the order in the early fourteenth century. Addison argues that the charges were largely false. The later chapters turn to the round church the Templars built in London, its effigies and restoration, and the lawyers' societies that came to occupy the Temple. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
