The History and Antiquities of the Doric Race, Vol. 1 is the first part of the translation by Sir George Cornewall Lewis and Henry Tufnell, published in 1830, of the work of the German scholar Karl Otfried Müller, who treated the Dorians as a distinct people with their own institutions and character. This volume traces the Dorians from their legendary origins in the north of Greece and their migration into the Peloponnese, through the foundation of Sparta, Argos, Corinth and the other Dorian states and their colonies in Crete, Sicily and Asia Minor, to the wars with Argos and Messenia and the rise of Spartan power. Müller then examines the Dorian religion, in particular the worship of Apollo. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
