Karl Otfried Müller

Karl Otfried Müller (1797–1840) was a German classical scholar, born in Silesia and educated at Breslau and Berlin. Appointed professor at Göttingen at twenty-two, he published studies of the Greek tribes and cities that treated myth as evidence for early history: Orchomenos and the Minyans, The Dorians, translated into English in 1830, and Prolegomena to a Scientific Mythology. He also wrote a handbook of the archaeology of art, a history of Greek literature that was finished by others, and an edition of the Eumenides of Aeschylus. He died of fever at Athens while traveling in Greece and is buried on the hill of Kolonos.
