The hero of the Filipinos
The Hero of the Filipinos, published in 1923, is a life of José Rizal written for American readers by the journalist Charles Edward Russell with Eulogio Balan Rodriguez. It follows Rizal from his boyhood in Calamba through his studies in Manila and Europe, the writing of the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo that exposed the abuses of Spanish and friar rule, his exile to Dapitan, and his trial and execution by firing squad in Manila in December 1896 at the age of thirty-five, an event that helped turn reform into revolution. Appendices give English translations of his poems, including "My Last Farewell," written on the eve of his death, and a bibliography. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
