The Greville Memoirs, Part 1 (of 3), Volume 1 (of 3)
A Journal of the Reigns of King George IV and King William IV
Charles Greville was Clerk of the Privy Council from 1821 to 1859, a post that put him in daily contact with kings, ministers and courtiers, and for most of his adult life he kept a journal of what he saw. This first volume, edited by Henry Reeve and published in 1874, opens in 1818 and follows the last years of the Regency and the reign of George IV. Greville moves easily from the racecourse and society gossip to cabinet crises, and his portraits of the king, the royal dukes, Wellington and the ministers are candid and sometimes caustic. The appearance of the journals so soon after his death caused a stir at court. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
