The Great Pestilence (A.D. 1348-9), Now Commonly Known as the Black Death was published in 1893 by Francis Aidan Gasquet, the Benedictine historian who later became a cardinal. Gasquet traces the plague from its first appearance in the East through Italy, France and other countries of Europe to its arrival in England, then follows its progress through London and the south, Gloucester, Worcester, Warwick and Oxford, and the rest of the kingdom, using bishops' registers and manor records to estimate the deaths among clergy and people. The closing chapters describe the desolation of the country and the lasting consequences of the mortality.
