Francis Aidan Gasquet (1846–1929) was an English Benedictine monk, historian and cardinal. Born in London, he became prior of Downside Abbey and later abbot president of the English Benedictines. His books, including Henry VIII and the English Monasteries, The Great Pestilence and The Eve of the Reformation, defended medieval Catholic England against Protestant historians, though later scholars faulted his accuracy. In 1907 Pope Pius X put him in charge of revising the Latin Vulgate, and he was made a cardinal in 1914, serving later as Vatican librarian and archivist.
