The Fundamental Principles of Old and New World Civilizations
A Comparative Research Based on a Study of the Ancient Mexican Religious, Sociological, and Calendrical Systems
The Fundamental Principles of Old and New World Civilizations, published in 1901 by the Mexican-American archaeologist Zelia Nuttall, is a long comparative essay issued by the Peabody Museum at Harvard. Nuttall argues that the religion, calendar and social order of ancient Mexico grew from the observation of the Pole Star and the circling of Ursa Major, producing a fourfold and sevenfold organization of state and cosmos symbolized by the swastika and the cross, and she then finds the same scheme in Egypt, Babylonia, China, Peru and the Mediterranean, concluding that the civilizations were in contact. Appendices compare Quechua, Nahuatl and Maya words. The thesis is no longer accepted, but the book remains a monument of early Americanist scholarship.
