The First of the English: A Novel
The First of the English, published in 1895, is a historical novel of the Dutch revolt against Spain by Archibald Clavering Gunter, the author of Mr. Barnes of New York. Guy Chester, a young English captain in the mold of Drake's men, brings his ship up the flooded Scheldt to Antwerp on a secret errand and is drawn into the war between the Duke of Alva's garrisons and the followers of William of Orange, with a Flemish heroine, a mutinous Spanish army and the city's sack to come. Gunter writes in the present tense, at full speed, with a taste for swordplay, disguises and narrow escapes, and he treats the Elizabethan English as the first of a line of free peoples.
