Archibald Clavering Gunter (1847–1907) was an English-born American novelist and playwright. Brought to California as a child, he worked as a civil and mining engineer and a stockbroker before turning to the theater. When publishers rejected his novel Mr. Barnes of New York, he issued it himself in 1887 through his own Home Publishing Company; it sold more than a million copies and he never looked back. Mr. Potter of Texas, That Frenchman!, Miss Nobody of Nowhere and The First of the English followed at the rate of about one a year, brisk adventure stories with American heroes abroad.
