The Expositor's Bible: The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 2

by George Thomas Stokes

About 10 h 25 min of reading22 chapters

George Thomas Stokes, professor of ecclesiastical history at Trinity College, Dublin, wrote two volumes on the Acts of the Apostles for The Expositor's Bible, a series of expositions for preachers and general readers, and this second volume appeared in 1892. It begins with the training of Saul as a rabbi and his conversion on the road to Damascus, then follows the first Gentile convert, Peter's vision at Joppa, the founding of the church at Antioch and the missionary journeys of Paul. Stokes draws on his knowledge of Jewish, Greek and Roman history and of early church history to set the narrative in context, and he writes in a clear, scholarly yet devotional style. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
