by Sir Henry Keppel

For the Suppression of Piracy

About 11 h 23 min of reading37 chapters

Captain Henry Keppel of the Royal Navy published The Expedition to Borneo of H.M.S. Dido in 1846, describing the campaign his ship fought in 1843 and 1844 against the pirates of the coasts of Borneo. A large part of the book consists of extracts from the journal of James Brooke, the English adventurer who had become Rajah of Sarawak, which Brooke had entrusted to Keppel. They recount his arrival in Borneo, how he came to rule Sarawak, his dealings with the Malay chiefs and the Dayak peoples, and his efforts to suppress piracy and head-hunting. Written from the imperial viewpoint of its day, it is a vivid source for an extraordinary episode in the history of Southeast Asia. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
